Axle & hub assembly source
« on: January 23, 2008, 08:40:06 PM »
We are having difficulties with ETrailer.com accepting P.O.s from the college. Does anyone know of another source for axles and hubs in the U.S.?

shouldnt be too hard to find.

One thing I do know though - to stick exactly with our design you do want to be sure its a 'dexter' hub - there are lots of cheaper Chinese hubs out there that make life difficult.  Southwest wheel company and Northern tool both carry crappy hubs in this size.

Brian - if you don't figure it out email me and I can play middle man.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

Dan,

in what way do these cheap hubs make life difficult? I was just getting ready to order one...talk about timely!

Cheers,

Thanks Dan

I may ask this of you. But first we'll try more on our own.

I was considering either my local Tractor Supply (TSC) or a local trailer supply house, that is very close to me. I didn't know there were differences to look out for.

What problems have some experienced? What do you look for when avoiding a certain style/brand?

Baum Hydraulics sells farm implement hubs and spindles. Here's a link to that section of their catalog. It's a short download, even with a dialup.

http://www.baumhydraulics.com/files/catalog/sec-f.pdf

I've used two of their hubs and spindles- good quality-the hubs are cast and machined in Omaha, spindles machined in Omaha. The spindles are SAE1018 steel, with custom materials available in quantities of 10 or more.

I have no commercial connection to them- just a satisfied customer.

one of the things you need to look for on a hub is if the back side has been machined flat.

so that when the back rotor is put in place it will run true and parallel with the front one .

I found a great assortment of hubs, axle stubs, etc. just a few miles from me at Guthrie Trailer sales in Waco. I bought a Chinese 6-bolt hub (machined both sides) with a USA axle stub and all USA bearings and seals for a little more than 50 bucks out the door. I will have one friend (machinist) check everything for clearances/true, and another friend perform all the NDT (Magnaflux) on the parts. Thanks for the tips! Lincoln Schlecht from Elm Mott, Texas
