Neo hard drive magnents
« on: May 01, 2008, 01:54:22 AM »
I have currently 6 neo hard drive magnets that have been extracted from the drives with a great amount of energy.

I was wondering about how many total magnets i would need to make my self a homemade alternator.  The windmill would have a 5 foot diameter and I would like achieve 12 volts.

Any suggestions?

I looked at going that way when I first started a couple of years ago.  I had a LOT of hard drives, and as you , expended a large amount of time and energy getting them out.  The trouble is, they are never JUST the ringht shape or size, and finding a lot the same is difficult too.  The older chunky looking HDs, the ones that look the size of a lunchbox, have some very nice ones in, but I think finding those is rare

I came to the conclusion that hard drive magnets make very good magnets for hard drives, and saved myself a lot of headaches by buying some nice neos.  I know that people have used them, but it just wasn't for me.

The ones I did recover are now used for holding notes to a glass window partition in the office (the glass has that chicken wire reinforcing in it).

The newer SATA drives have much bigger mags in them Western Digital seems to have the thicker of the bunch.

I have also noticed while taking them apart, that the wire for the heads is now aluminum rather than copper.

The good part is that you can get a pretty penny for the Aluminum casings.

Cheers

If you can find some old SCSI drives, those have the largest.  I took the magnets out of some old 4.3gb SCSIs, and could not believe the size of them.

The harddrives that I have are the huge SCSI 9 gb models with 10-12 platters and 1.6 inches tall.  The magnents are about 1.5x.75x.375.  Hope this helps and thanks for all of the support.
