Large thoughts - Small Wind Project
« on: July 06, 2011, 12:06:05 PM »
Got a quick question for the board at large.....will the specs on this motor be good enough for a small 12v genny to keep the batteries on my back up system topped off? I sorta fell short on electricity when the tornado came through here several months back and knocked out our power to the area for eight days. I had a backup generator (gas), but fuel and getting around was difficult at times. I want to be more ready next time!   ;D  Planning on about 4' carved blades, on top a 25-30' tower? I've been reading for several days now about the Ametek dc motors, ECM's, Windblue, etc. Gets confusing, so a little help, please?
Do these specs sound promising? Thanks for the help, folks........Bill of Cullman

Not so good.

The peak amps limit is pretty low, 3.7A is not much.
I got more than half that out of my Mini-ECM (size of a softball) with 25.5" diameter prop.

12V cut in is about 100 RPM.
No chance any common blade design that is suited to 50W (3.7A) will keep out of hard stall.

That's better, but motors are kind of a "Try it and See" situation.

Cut in at around 400RPM.  That's not too bad for a carved wood 4' blade.

Some of the specs are a bit unusual for what I am used to tinkering with.  Just has a funny feel about it.
(Might want to verify the specs on a TEFC 42 NEMA chart (somewhere))
Like a 5/16" shaft on a 1HP motor,
and 4 x 10/32 mounting screws?
That's the same shaft and mounting as my softball sized 1/15th mini-ECM, except the mini-ECM has larger ~2-7/8" OC?
http://fieldlines.com/board/index.php/topic,138380.0.html

I would NOT trust a 4' blade on a 5/16" shaft.

Notice "* Dimensions can be less than indicated"
But that's a lot less.

Friend of mine just gave me an AC motor (freebie)....Looks new.

Horsepower : 1/2 HP
Voltage : 115 / 230V
Motor Phase : Single/Double
Amperage : 9 / 4.5 A
Hertz : 60 Hz
Frame Type : 56
Speed: 1725 RPM's
Shank Diameter : 5/8 in. x 1 3/4 in.
Farm Duty Rated

So, with 230v / 15v (desired dc charging voltage, rectified) = 15.33 & 1725 rpm / 15.33 =114 rpm for 15 volt dc charging.

Is this the correct way to figure this out?
This motor only weights 20.5 lbs so I could "stick" it up rather easily on a little 25-30 foot tower with the correct furling system, eh?
I just want to use this to help keep my batteries (3 8D-12v in parallel) more topped off, where (when) the sun don't shine.  I also have 365w's
of solar panels doing the job right now. Appreciate the help.......

Well... sorry... not good as it is.

It is a standard 4-pole squirrel cage motor.
It requires 'converting'.  Adding magnets, maybe changing the windings (motor coils), etc.
You will find more information about it searching 'Zubbly', and 'Garbogen' is sort of similar.

Thanks G-
Back to the drawing board then!!!
Think I'll just try to find a good ole DC Motor to use, what say you? But thanks for the replies.......

Hi Bill,

Since you are hell bent on a small wind project using motors, don't ignore GE ECM motors. With a little bit of work they can be made to work. Depending on the HP of the motor, they can produce typically up to 200W (max).

You can make friends with HVAC folk who might get them as dead units  because the brain can has failed (harder now though since they make replacement brain cans). But a lot of the service guy would still rather replace the whole unit.

Search the board for GE ECM, or just ECM. (there should be quite a few posts about what to do with em)

Just grabbing regular AC motors and posting specs... well .... you need and understanding of what you can or want to  use. I Believe that is in a FAQ post. Woofer's FAQ http://fieldlines.com/board/index.php/topic,143574.0.html is a good place to start.

Bill,
I sent you a PM.

Yes, ECM is good if you want to get deeper into a project,

Rover and AdamL both posted some nice info.
