Having fun learning wire size to magent power
« on: February 22, 2009, 01:02:03 PM »
What can I hope for. The 12'' by 1/4'' disk has for now 2x1x1/2'' magnets from Lowes. 12 ea. For now I have 5/8'' collars welded on to fit the 5/8 shaft to hold them together. All of this is setting on an old hard drive motor so I can spin it. The hard drive motor lets it spin for a long time after getting it going. Great little thing for testing this way.

I have found a great source of ready made coils. 120 volt to 12 volt dc wall warts. The ac coil side of it works great. At 150 to 200 rpm I get 1.5 to 3 volts.  I have not took time to be precise. I have made test coils out of # 12, 14 and other sizes with little luck with these magnets.

.

That is with the 9 coils to 12 magnet set up.

Can any one tell me what kind of wattage I maybe could see out of this before it smoked the thin wired coils? Yea I know but it's fun to play with when it's cold out.

Mind you this is all in fun and learning.

having a means of determining rpm is the next step.

a musical metronome is handy.

even a digital clock , left blinking will give you 60 rpm

is the air gap fixed now that you have welded the collars or can you adjust it.

Hi electrondady1

I have a rpm gage but have not used it yet. I was hopping someone with the knowledge could answer my question about the thin wired coils.

The rateing was ac to dc at 1 amp but I am useing just the ac coil out of it.

Ok so no one really knows with the cheap magnets.

The AC coil is the one with many turns of tiny wire.

Rated at around 175ma is my bet.

Thanks ghurd.

I new it would not be much. But it's fun to light led's with them.

By the way ghurd I still have not hooked the controller to my fan that I got from you. I will post it when I do.

basil ,

the very fine wire will allow very dense coils with  a lot of turns.

the great thing about using very fine wire is the ability to turn multi strand coils.

allowing you to reduce resistance

the most i've turned is a four in hand coil.

Remember that the hole in the middle of the coil should be about the size of the magnet for best results.

You say "For now I have 5/8'' collars welded on to fit the 5/8 shaft to hold them together." - I hope you don't really mean that as the disks should attract each other, not repel.
