Indiana General 24V 350rpm shaft's internal thread pitch
« on: September 02, 2009, 10:15:13 AM »
Does anyone knows where to find bolts to fit the internal thread pitch of an Indiana General 24V 375rpm shaft. I guess it is 3/8" UNEF but i am not sure.

Regards,

Mike

I have a few Indianas, and the holes are different.

None of mine are anywhere near 3/8", closer to #10.

I expect the hole size depends on the original purchaser's specifications.

One can make a wooden insert that will 'screw' into the end. The insert can be started, measure the length sticking out, make a known number of turns, remeasure and calculate the pitch.

A good guess can be made of the 'base diameter' of the screw.

Now, armed with two good pieces of information and a 'screw pitch and drill chart' a SWAG can be made of the pitch and diameter.

3/8 UNEF would have a thread count of 32 threads per inch. UNF would be 28 TPI. UNC..16 TPI

A good thread pitch gauge would easily help you figure out what is needed. Most mechanics or machine shops would have one.

UNEF is a rare bird

Try MSC industrial...a quick search gave me a UNF (3/8-24) this:http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=2071709&PMT4NO=69980186

 screw pitch gages:http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/GSDRVSM?PACACHE=000000107449849

Push comes to shove, you can spin one down on a lathe from 4140 and flame harden it...if you are not use to the color method by heat treating, just heat it until it is about cherry red or when a magnet will no longer stick to it and quickly quench in oil.

Most carbon steels will loose magnetism when they reach their quench point..Old machining indian trick... dont even temper or draw the 4140 back, use as hardened...it will be around 55 RC....good for grade 8 bolts etc. etc.

After some research and much trial and error, i guess it is 3/8" 26tpi (British standard?)

Does anyone have experience on this and know where i can find bolts for this?

Thanks in advance,

Mike
