tower advice?
« on: October 08, 2009, 05:32:40 AM »
I got a deal that could be worth my time.  I just duno what it could be rated for.

this is what the add says

"Used 40 foot tv antenna tower, mast, and all hardware. "

I asked him this:

"is this standing? how long are the sections? do you have the base as well? do you knwo what the load ratign is on this? "

his reply with 4 photos, that I do not know how to post on here is:

" Attached are 4 photos of the tower that I have for sale. There are 5-8 foot sections, and 1-10 foot mast pipe, and no base. The bottom section is 22 inches across. I do not know the load rating."

if anyone wants to see pics, let me know and I can email them to you.

what would you say this could hold for a wind mill?

price is very good deal...he is only asking 55$ for the full tower.  is it worht it?  i would love to one day have a 10-12 footer up, would this be strong enought?

TV antenna towers usually have bracing on the legs that is horizontal, not diagonal.  If that's so, then only put small windmills on it (4 feet max), and it will need some bracing too.  Unsuited for the larger machine you suggest.  Thanks for asking.

Don't be discouraged.  This would be good for something like an anemometer, or a satellite dish, and much easier to put up than just about any other kind of tower.

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

from the picture posted it looks like a Rohn tower, if it is a Rohn it will be stamped on the inside of the leg Bx-- .

if it is a Rohn, My Rohn book says, Free standing 6SQFT of antenna 3Ft. above tower.

I'm using A HDBX 48' With 3 guy stations (1/4" 7 strand guys) and have had 11' rotor with no problems.

If legs are not stamped..... then you are looking at a copy , check it out is my best advise.

not to hijack the thread, but does your Rohn book have any info on their SSV series?  i have sections 6n, 5n and 4n...pretty sure it will handle a 10' but always like real #'s.  guy i got it from said that Rohn spec'd it for him to hold a 16' mill, but he couldn't find the paper work.

thanks

not sure of your location, but if in the states, keep checking craigslist.

i got a 60' rohn free standing tower, never assembled, for $500.  i found several other towers too, so they are out there to be had.
