Fiber 12Mbps - new from Quest here; 30 years of dial up and now the Internet is boring.

Some type of wireless internet.  Have a wire dish on the roof.  4meg connection but can only get about 2.5 at best.  Distance is at it's limit.  Or that is what the company says.

Got a sat here, pay $99 a month for a 1 meg download/500kb upload and 5gig of downloads/uploads combined. Paid $130 last month and sick of it. Only 2k out of the metro area and pay thru the nose for basic stuff.

and one might wonder why i'm called ruddycrazy

A few years ago I helped build an ISP infrastructure here to bring a dialup replacement to rural areas. My compensation for that work was free use of the system. It is NOT fast but it is faster than dialup and faster than anything else available except satellite. I still get it free of cost but, alas, the ISP has been smothered by latecomers to town with cheap access. At least in town. Out here it is still a wasteland of junk telco lines put in when Roosevelt was in the White House I think?

My particular link involves 3 farm silos with repeaters, 2 radio towers with point to point setups all to an ISP that only has a dual T1 at the ISP. We offered the very first internet access in this county first with a BBS and then real dialup iand wireless nternet.

Sadly the ISP is slowly being put out of business by the "Big Boys" like so many mom and pop businesses in this country.

We have a plan to keep it alive for a cadre of rural users who require decent internet for business should it fail.

Bottom line is:

Not everyone lives in high speed internet territory and I am one of them. Just how I do internet.

It is partly why our garage looks like this:

The mesh grid is for internet the dishes are no longer used because we do not use Satellite TV anymore but they were in use with my DreamBox when the photos were taken and the solar array has tripled in size from 300 watts  to 850 watts since that photo was taken in January of '05.

Because I checked "other" in the poll

comcast cable here in the tacoma area
varies between ~40 and 54mbps

when i relocate to the country, i am afraid i will be very upset having to
go way down it speed.

i remember going from dialup the cable, wow!!!!

what took several minutes was nearly instantaneous after changing to cable.

yes we have come a long ways since 14.4kbps on dial up.
using a 386 model 80 ibm microchannel.

I didn't get a vote button on this one either.
That's the reason I replied last month with a "Dial-up" answer.

I don't think if a couple votes fall through cracks, it's gonna' be that critical (especially mine).
I think the administrators are doing a great job on this new look we have anyway.

It's interesting how the results are shaping up.

Makes me wonder what the poll would have looked like a couple of years ago with a better economy.  I for one am considering playing the "cancel my service and keep switching" game since the sweetheart deals always seem to go to "new" customers.

Zap;
I know the feeling... I just did the same for home. I was going to lower the down to 3Mb and was asking about getting it lower with ALL the junk snail mail, they were saying"Nope sorry" right up until I said okay disconnect it then I'll go with cable. BANG now I still have 6Mb paying 1/3rd less go figure.

For those not too far from civilization, but past the cable lines,
there is some new stuff coming around (at least here).

My understanding is it operates from a "4G" cell phone tower.
The modem is like a cell phone, and does high speed internet for desktop and wireless router laptop and the home phone, and the package included cell phone service too.
The kids going door-to-door could not answer many questions other than price, but the price was pretty reasonable.

Threw the brochure away a couple days ago.

it's called tethering.
The newer Version of the IPhone have the ability and is what they will be using for that cute front camera.
Kind of like the old 2G Nokia phone used to be able to do only 3x faster, "faster" being relative.
On the upcoming trip to Philippines, I will have my "little netbook and the ability to up-link, provided we can even get a signal.
Anyone else on here have SKYPE?

Heres' a question whats going to happen when the sun sends out a magnetic pulse that disruptes the entire magnetic field of the Earth let alone the satilites ;)

I thought that happened a couple weeks ago.  Lots of nice auroras.

Or are you talking about the every-couple-centuries "really big coronal mass ejection" {like the one that caused trouble during the early years of telegraphy}?  Or an intermittent-on-megayear-scale geomagnetic pole reversal.?

Internet is mostly on optical fiber these days.  No big problem from magnetic storms (or the occasional magnetic tsunami) unless it comes in on the power grid or some more local copper wiring.

Satellites are pretty well radiation-hardened these days (after lots of trouble with previous solar flares).  You might lose one or two - or even several of 'em - in a "big one".  But probably not all of 'em.  Think "comm gets fouled up in a hurricane" level of disruption.

Power grid's more problematic.  A lot of the long-lines have the common mode grounded at both ends or opened at one.  The former can put massive currents through transformers in a major geomagnetic storm, while the latter can result in arcing over at the ungrounded end.  Either can fry the transformers, which then take months each to make - and in a "big one" many would go at once.  The right solution is ground at one end and a (pricey) load resistor at the other.  But the power companies have only begun to put 'em in and are in no hurry.  So a "really big one" mag storm might burn out enough house-sized transformers to take down much of the grid and KEEP parts of it down for quite a while, with the fried parts coming back in chunks over months or years.

medium speed dsl from ATT. I don't do movie/music downloading so I don't need anything faster. Having copper wire is nice. Even after the hurricanes, when the power is out I still have phone service.
