fisher paykel success on electric trike

Hi all,

long time no post,

have now got fisher paykel motor working off 24volt on purpose built trike,

yee haa, not particularly efficient though as each phase fires separately,

anyway it means that it is possible to use the volvo type wind gennis as motors too.

You would need to use some hall effect sensors to fire 3 mosfets in sequence to

run the genni as motor.

would be a bit of a challenge would imagine hardest part will be to put hall effect

sensors in correct positions, may not be that hard,

dont intend to try it in near future but maybe down the track a bit

We used a F&P motor to drive a solar car a couple of years ago. We rewound it to suit the lower voltage, used neo magnets and direct drive. It did work ok, heaps of power, but we had too many problems with blown mosfets in the controller, so changed to a differnet drive configuration a few months before the solar race. The Smartdrive already has three Hall effect sensors on the stator where there is an arrow on your stator. It seems to contain a grey chip (or coil??), one tiny chip marked "S132" and one tiny chip marked "221".  The electronic circuit board on the washing machine contains the word "Hall" on the PCB. As I ripped the washer apart I came across those parts. I have wondered what those chips do and if I can make use of it to pick up the RPM for the LM2917 frequency to voltage converter or if I pick it up from the secondary off the transformer and I meant to ask this forum what those chips are doing.

Well, the "Hall" would be a Hall-effect sensor to sense the speed/position of the rotor.  Output is 99% likely to be a 0 to 5 VDC square wave.  Nicely interfacible to a microcontroller or a V to F converter.

qizmo had a look at your solar car , wholly toledo very nice.

did you manage to get fisher/paykel running on 3 phase simultaneously or one phase at a time as i have it running.

would really like to discuss with you, found probs blowing mosfets too, but if i keep amps under 10amp on one phase theres no prob. with blowing fets.

Had a look on your solarbbq site but could not find the trike info.

There is info about a hub motor 4 wheel drive go-kart using the F&P smart drive motors here http://www.numurkahsc.vic.edu.au/Tech.htm  It's ahybrid and they also had an article in issue 87 of ReNew magazine about their petrol driven battery charger for it.
