Think of a Diode or Rectifier as a "one way stop valve" for electricity. It allows the electrical current to pass in one direction only. In the case of a DC turbine it allows current to pass from the turbine to the battery but not from the battery to the turbine.

In an AC turbine it converts the alternating current ( switching between -&+&-&+) to DC so that it can be used to charge the battery.

You are in the right place!

Just for clairity.

Water or wind turbine?

Diodes. Electric goes one way, but not the other.  It costs about half a volt to push it through the right way.

Prarie lets MN wind grow big - my bird bath had white caps last weekend when front came through - passive solar tub melts in 28~F then snap froze w/ wave pushed water higher then the rim on the south side, frozen white cap. Weird hearing all the door-window weather-stripping vibrate like harmonica reeds 95db loud - hadn't heard that in a few years. Shook the whole house for 10-15 minutes...

Make sure you over-rate everything esp. if people sleep in it. When it gets to <10% relative humidity stuff burns hyper fast. I'd invest in a charge controller w/ load dump if you leave it running unattended for more then a day or two. If we get the -20~F daytime high stuff this winter look into insulating the battery box or using a lightbulb off the load dump to heat battery chest but beware hydrogen build up.
