Accupower Select 2000 UPS
« on: May 02, 2005, 02:44:44 AM »
Hi,

Have just been given one by a good friend. I know they are deadly to play with but any advice will be appreciated and no legal action will ensue. A few questions:

  1. A previous post suggested the agent suffered a heart attack when asked for a circuit diagram but it might be out there along with the Arc of the Covenant.
  2. Would I have to instal a fan ex PC if I were to run this unit for

more than a few hours using it as an inverter rather than as a UPS?

  1.  The unit has four (4) 240V outlets, do they all have to be nicely load balanced or can one take the whole load?
  2. Not only has it one DB25 or PC access, it also has two more RJ45s (network??). Has anyone played with PC+software for logging or alarms??

So many questions, so little time?

Well domwild I was hoping someone would post a great comment on your question.  Why?

Because I found an APC Smart-UPS 2000 the same day you posted and the second I spotted it I had the same thoughts as you.  From what I've found online the APC will go up to 1700 watts.  It's a 2 part sys with the batteries in another case and a cable between the two which to me would seem perfect for RE.  I only found the electronic guts and am not sure if the magic blue smoke has "left the building" or not.  Nothing looks fried but I have a 400 watt Victor inverter that I zapped with static and nothing looks fried in it either. This APC is 48v and I don't have enough batteries to check the thing out.

From looking at the guts of mine I would say you wouldn't have to worry about the balance of the outlets.  As for the heat build up... muffin fans are cheap insurance.

Hope you find something, I'll keep looking and if I come up with anything I'll post back.

Zap,

Thanks for comments. Had not even opened the case when I posted. Now I found a fan blowing at the heat sinks, so I do not have to worry.

This unit is a 2000VA, 36V job. Will try to find three cheap 12V batteries to test it out.

I might even be able to work out what the lights on the front panel mean.

Found a post here on UPS which goes as far as cutting out the switchover relay and deadening the buzzer which comes on when the power goes off - or when you use it as an inverter and have no power in for charging the batteries.

Regards,

Link to the post on ups?

For 125$ I bought a 3kw APC UPS, plan to use it to power house during power failure.

Golf cart batteries for couple days run time.

Have fun.

Thanks for the lead on the other postings dominic.  I had read some of them before I had found this ups and should have read all the way through because everyone in the first part of the posts seemed to think it was a bad idea.  I just hope the one I found still works.  Good luck with yours.

scottsAI here's an google powered search I did within fieldlines http://www.google.com/custom?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&cof=AWFID%3Aba35deb1811a3d8e%3BL%3A

zap,

thanks for the search. You found more posts than I did. Will have to read them all, but not on mother's day!

Mine seems to work. Mighty spark when I hooked up the test batteries (3 for OZ$10), they needed a bit of charging, then 240V power on, a bit of 50Hz mains hum, then pulled the power and the buzzer and fan came on and voila, 237VAC on the output.

Am still intrigued by the RS232 DB25 connector. Will hook up a PC, load the terminal program and see what comes on the screen.

Thanks for help.
