Can AVR be added to homemade generator?
« on: January 22, 2005, 12:43:52 PM »
I have a generator I made from a purchased 9.5KW generator head and an old 18hp Craftsman tractor engine. I see that some generators have automatic voltage regulation built in. Can I somehow add that externally to my setup? The only thing that I have now it the spring loaded governer on the engine that raises increases the throttle when there is more load but I am worried about surges damaging electronic in my home when I use the generator.

Thanks,

Charley

There are special transformers available that can stabilize variable input voltages from 90 to 130 volts for a clean stable 120 volts. Commercial power conditioners use them. Their call Fero-resonant power transformers. I have periodically salvaged them from old equipment.

The throttle control is to keep the RPMs constant under varying load so the output frequency stays the same, I suspect your gen laready has built in regulation, hook it up to a load like a space heater and test it before tearing into it.
