True sine wave inverter and computers?
« on: May 17, 2005, 03:01:40 AM »
Been playing with the vector 700 watt inverters I got from the local "mart", but a little afraid to plug the TV and computer to them. I have heard that these types of electronics can be damaged by square sign wave inverters. Any body here ever had problems? If not why do they make true sign wave inverters? Any help would be great.

My experiance?

The TV and computor are fine.

The stereo may hiss or buzz.

The Red #VEC043 is better than stuff with extra numbers like 'POB' (Power On Board') or something related to 'Target' (usually silver grey colored with a carry handle from a 'sportsmans' catalog).

I like the red ones for part time or backup use.

Some people don't.

My soldering guy has used a 400w Vector for 5 years or so, 50 hours a week.

No problem.

Do not connect it to the battery backwards.

It may live once or twice after changing fuses, but thats about it.

Hi there,

There was an interesting discussion to do with this a while back. Here is the link:

Basically, MSW inverters work for almost anything. Sine wave inverters are needed for certain specific applications like some motors, and also certain types of medical equipment.

Hope that link helps,

Cheers,

Stephen.
