Sinewave Inverter 13V To 110V
« on: May 18, 2005, 06:28:17 PM »
A customer of mine has a solar system. He wants to hookup a laptop. The modem is a 12 volt He has a modified signwave inverter that he wants to hook up the laptop to. The inverter is a 13 volt to 110 volt. The way the power inverter is modified is that it is not in a wave pattern but rather in steep corner pattern. He also wants to hook up a satellite internet system that has a modem that uses 12 volt. He also stated that whenever he hooks up a cordless drill to charge, that it will mess up the battery. Will the inverter also mess up the battery to the laptop and messup the modem? I appreciate any comments.

Somebody else please verify this.

If you look at the power supply for the laptop, I think you will find that it can handle a really wide range of input.

Mine's not in front of me, but I think it is 100-250v 50-60Hz input.  It converts that to something like 18v dc but I don't remember exactly.

Point being, I'd be surprized it the power supply for the laptop couldn't smooth out square wave input.

Again, please get a second opinion before you fry anything.

Have Fun,

Many laptops will work directly off 12VDC, if so go that way and keep it simple.

I have 2 laptops that run directly off 12 VDC into the power coupling. Have for 2 years now, Only downside is they don't charge the internal battery very well that way but run fine. No conversion losses thru inverter then thru power brick on laptop

Hi there,

When you modem, are you refering to the power supply for the laptop? Or are you refering to an external modem that uses a 12v wall adapter?

Anyway, I have plugged several laptops into Modified sine wave inverters, and the have all working fine. I have also used many 12v wall adapters with a MSW inverter, and all except one worked fine. The one that didn't work simply delivered less voltage than it was supposed to, so I just went out and bought one of those cheap universal ones and it works fine with the inverter.

Cheers,

Stephen.

What brand and voltage of drill?

Some of the fancy chargers don't like inverters.

Some Makitas don't like a particular inverter,

but do fine on another, the same brand and model.

Satuser:

If the battery is messed up, it could be that it needs a large filter capacitor to reduce the current pulses ( it may be that the cable from the battery to the load is too long, so a capacitor at the end will help, for DC place about 1000 to 4000 Microfarads per amp of load) 25 to 35 Volts breakdown is OK for the capacitors.

Get something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=42165&item=6770703649&rd=1

Many others available check them out!

I bought a similar one for my IBM Laptop, runs great and charges laptop battery.

Priced nice. I had a Dell before, worked fine on it also. Switch for the voltage, different connector for each laptop. Does not get very warm, so must be efficient.

Much better than going through inverter and laptop supply. Huge losses. My laptop brick supply gets quite warm, that means power losses. The car adapters gets less warm, QED.

Have fun.
