Problems with portable electric generator
« on: June 30, 2005, 06:08:44 PM »
I have a Coleman Powermate 3500 watt generator that is run by a Honda GX160 motor.

The problem that I am having is that the power produced by the generator is too high. I tested it with no load and the reading was 165 volts. How does one correct the problem. From what I have read I need to lower the rpm but keep the hertz cycle between 59.5 to 62.5. How do I measure the RPM and Hertz cycles?

I tested it with no load and the reading was 165 volts.

Now try testing it with a load !

How long have you had this?

If this hasn't been abused or had a traumatic

accident everything is probably okay it would be normal for it to have a higher open voltage(no load)

The govenor takes care of the

proper speed which will assure the approximate 60 cycles...Not to many electical tools apply to an exact 60 cycles anymore maybe the 110 volt

electric clocks....

Check to see how the throttle is operated. If it has a mechanical linkage, it may be stuck and needs to be lubricated.

3600 rpm 60 sec in 1 min. 3600 divided by 60 is 60 hertz. This is controled by the speed of the motor only  and is what you want to get right. The voltage that most things can run off of can vary more than the hertz. As in it will run on 100-130 volts  but sure dont like 50 hertz for long. A cheap P3 test meter will tell you a lot and handy for other things also. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5983985935  Iam not sell this on ebay but something to look into enjoy!

The problem is the capacitance of the generator ( it seems to be an induction generator), also it seems that the capacitance changed in value.

Some gas generators may have a frequency circuit to set the frequency right and the voltage output be as well regulated with a cheap circuit using a Triac that may be stuck high giving the 165 volts.

Ask Coleman about the problem and tell them the gen is far away so you need the info.
