6v to 12v battery switch
« on: April 02, 2006, 10:37:12 PM »
How could I build an electronic switch to switch between charging a small 6v battery and 12v battery for a small wind turbine when it crosses a voltage threshold? I'm only making a few watts and would like to put it all to use even if below 12v charging voltage.

PLEASE CLARIFY:

You have a generator that produces enough voltage to charge a 12 volts battery but sometimes the output is low so you want to charge a 6 volts battery and this switch to be automatic - CORRECT ?.

Detail the capabilities of the generator voltage and current at what RPM, also unloaded voltage at that RPM.

Sometimes is better to increase the voltage to 12 volts if below 12 volts, though current capability of the generator is needed to be able to have a good conversion

If need be, I could design a transistor circuit that would automatially switch it, but it would probably take too much power to operate the circuit and would negate any "extra" power you were generating by switching to the 6V circuit.....

Yes, I would like it to be automatic and i'm not sure at what rpm it produces power but at a 10mph wind with blades on it it can make 2-3 watts and the voltage varies from around 8 to 16v(unloaded making from 170 to 270 ma). At 15 mph It vibrates a lot but makes from 3-6 watts (with a load).

INTERESTING project for someone with time available.

Nanotech the ball is yours, one could use ICM555 (Cmos) driving small power MosFets and a low current amplifier for switching to higher 12 volts.

Also with the same IC and MosFet with a Choke to produce a higher voltage to charge the 12 volts from lower than 12 volts source,

About 30 or 40 milliwatts circuit.

fungus , i like your micro gen .

have you seen mine .

http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2006/3/3/204139/5265

i'm gonna put a 6 coil / 8 pole three phase alt on that baby.

much fun..

since that post , i've put a different 5 1/4 " HD motor/ bearing on

i cut a bicycle drive sprocket to fit inside the 5 1/4" space , and put eight (so far) 7/8 "x 1/2 " neos on there, and am going to wind the coils soon.

The stepper project?

Maybe series the bridges for 12V more of the time.  I will decrease, a lot.  I think Jerry has done this with some luck.

I had an idea of a high speed by-pass diode on both seriesed bridges.  Not sure how that would work.
