Vawt Speed Control
« on: April 14, 2006, 04:00:25 PM »
My current 8x8 rotates at 60rpms in a 10mph wind has most of you know from earliar postings.

I have a 5hp motor conversion that I think can easily control overspeed.

My hope is to start the gen at around 60rpms and release it just before stall.

Im going to use water heating elements for the load.

I would be pulsing power to the load and also controlling rotor speed.

Shaft speed sensors?

Some sort of centfifugal clutch?

Grid power to to toggle relays?

Motor starter coil.

There is very little cogging(can turn easily with 2 fingers)in the motor and I can warm a small hand dryer element turning it by hand.Turns hard though.

Thanks for any ideas.

            Frustrated in wisconsin..........

Make your own centrifugal Cone clutch ....

really easy! Cut a pulley in half so the two

sheaves are separated..some pulleys are even

just spot welded together...take a drill and

drill the spots out and they come apart....

now cut an old belt so it just wraps around the

circumference....some tape to hold it together

long enough to put a large hose clamp around

the outside of the belt....or skip this step if

you can buy a belt the exact circumference of the

pulley halves.

A counterbalance for the motor and just a

feather touch will work it or more specifically

a small solenoid....the centrifugal switch from

and old motor that operates the starter windings

and that will do it?

Once you get going on it....lot easier than I

might make it sound..

           Have Fun!
