Battery Bank Setup
« on: July 17, 2006, 06:53:47 PM »
I have a large battery bank consisting of 12 2 volt cells. Each 2 volt cell weights 250 pounds and is 1075 amp hour. Currently I have 2 banks of 12 volt hooked together and serving my 12 volt 3000watt inverter for various appliances and also serving a half dozen 12 volt halagen lamps through out the house. I have 2 c60 trace charge controllers monitoring my 12 volt bank and diverting power to a 40 gallon hotwater tank that has been modified for 4 600 watt 12 volt water heating elements, and it works great.

My generators consist of a 1000 whisper, a 10 dual rotor, and my new addition, a 17 foot Dual Rotor, 24 mags 1x2x1/2 each disc, with 18 coils in the stator wired 3 phase, wound with #14.5 4 in hand, 17 turns. It makes power in low wind conditions and puts out 100 + amps in 15 - 20 m.p.h breeze.

I have wound a new stator for 24 volt for this 17 foot machine, 18 coils, 34 turns of #14 wire, 2 in hand. I plan to change the other wind generators to 24 volts also.

I made a sketch of my battery set up and would like to know if this will work with the equipment I have at this time. I plan to purchase a 24 volt inverter to replace my 12 inverter in the near future.

I will still need to tap the 24 volt bank for my 12 volt halagon emergency lighting which I have in place throughout the house.

Would appreciate if you guys would look at my sketch and tell me if I messed up somewhere. I would hate to smoke up some of my equipment, it was a long time coming. I have more pictures in my files. I am adding 12 more of the same batterys to my system this fall.       Thankyou Mitcamp

Are those 2 V train cells?

I have a friend with some 2 V train cells,

but he won't add a charge controller and keeps

smoking windmills. 3 403's

and on his third malard.

He's got the great site and even then I made him a CD full

of otherpower info he's a bit more than hardheaded.

If you goggle search battery banks you will see some sites that show pictures of how to hook them up.

I am new to this too. I just built my first 24 volt bank out of 6 volt batteries two days ago. When I googled batery bank I clicked on how to wire. It brought me right back to this site. Go all the way to the top and click where it says other power. You need to get off the discusion board. Click on batteries and it will show you how to wire with 2 volt batteries. When you get time click on wind,or what ever you are going to use to power your bank, and read everything there.

After you built your bank take a multi meter and put it on the terminals and see how it adds the voltages up. You wont have 24 volts until you connect it to the first positive and the last negative of the series group.

jmk, I did not have a problem with the connection of the batterys in that regard. I did check each time I tied a battery to the string, just to verify my connections. The problem that I wasn,t sure on is, I was woundering if I could saftely tap 12 volts off each end. I would like to tap off one side of the 24 volt bank for 12 volts for my 12 volt inverter and then tap off the opposite side, for my 12 volt light system.

I have 2 generators that I,m changing to 24 volt and I going to feed them both to the 24 volt bank, through the 2 c60 controllers.

I have a third generator, a 10 foot dual rotor, that I am leaving 12 volt and keeping seperate from the 24 volt system. It feeds a 12 volt fork lift battery for my attached garage, which is a seperate system all together. Thank You for the information, it all helps.   Mitcamp

Oops, I missed that part. Someone with more experience will have to jump in. From what I remember reading somewhere, is that it's not good for the batteries, to tap off a portion of them like that. I think it puts an uneven balance in the bank. I don't know what post asked it before. I'm not that good at searching the board. I always get stories that don't pertain to my question, but I will see if I can find it. That's an awesome 18' turbine you built.

I found this story.    http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2004/10/13/18416/423 I don't know why it didn't hyper link? It did when I pasted it to my mail, but when I copied and pasted it from there it left. It should work if you copy and past it to your search.
