Electronic Help Needed
« on: March 18, 2007, 03:22:54 AM »
Recently i have run across some oddball electronic parts

i cant identify, caps,resistors,diodes,transistors

are easy enough, but i have found some 4-8-10 legged

IC chips, a barrel shaped device with three leads out each end

and a little sputnick looking thing, Dose anyone have a good rescource

on how to identify and to find out what function these things

provide?

internet search didnt return much mostly suppliers, the sites that

claimed to ID parts didnt and some were vague

  any help would be appreciated

Rufus:

You just have defined the bodies of semiconductors that are around more than 100 million different parts.

Why are you asking that for, I see that you are not familiar with the electronic parts and their definitions.

to find just few parts is OK to search the different parts but if many that is a pain if you are not familiar with the nomenclature of the parts.

Nando

  Thats exactly it

i would like to know

what they are and what

is thier function!

I'm just looking for a rescource

to identify some of these things,

I'm just curious, i was not born

with all the knowlage i possess,

i'm still adding to it.

If you could help in any way that would be great

RUFUS;

Any chance you could provide a picture? That way one of us can probably say "Oh thats a noodlemeier valve" or whatever. Get you narrowed down on what you need to look for.

Like Nando said, there are millions of parts and lots of them "look" the same but do very different things. Most but not all parts have some form of part number that is what you need to search for usually to get info on what it is. You may need an electron microscope to read some of the numbers, too. Hehe, kidding but a good magnifier really helps.

Cheers.

Yes - to agree with Tom here... a search does wonders.

It's very rare that I can't type in the part number (it should be printed on the part) on Google and find out exactly what it is.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

O.K. GUYS

I havent as yet figured out how to reduce the

size of my pictures, so not wanting to start

another picture war please visit my user

files under electronic parts, i copied all the

numbers and other info on to the piece of paper

these are just a few, i run across more everyday

   funny looking aint they

The only one that I can identify is a 741 OP-Amp. This is an old style unit that I believe is no longer used as the DIP  741 op-amps are more efficient power wise. the silver(or grey) colored item with a lead on each ende and a wire like wrapped around the middle, I believe is a capacitor. I can't recall what the wire in the middle was for. Maybe Nando can refresh this old mind.

A couple of parts look like they may have OEM part #s which may not be identifiable as the part s are supplied with equipment Mfrs part numbers.

Parts with factory part #s can be looked up as someone has suggested in a previous comment to your post

The LM307 is an obsolete OpAmp chip from National Semiconductor.  Google LM307 to learn more.

The Large TO-3 device appears to be a power transistor and I expected to be able to cross-reference it as a 2SB9018 but I couldn't find a reference for it.

I believe the little 6 legged device that looks like a piece of foil wrapped candy is a mercury relay but I'm not sure.

The small ceramic device with wires on the ends and one wrapped around the middle is (I believe) a surge suppression device used for lighning protection in electronic circuits.

RP, the B9018 part number is a date code instead of part number.

B is Day of week,A=Monday B=Tuesday C=Wednesday etc, etc. 9018 is year 1990 and 18 is the week of the year. So, this part was produced on Tuesday of the 18th week of 1990.

Date codes vary from Mfr to Mfr. Many don't have day of week.

Ahh...  Okay, LH0063CK is a "Very Fast Buffer Amplifier", basically it's another OpAmp but for high slew rate signals.  Kind of a specialty item.

Hey Guys

And Girls

I just want to say thanks for all the input,

 That was kinda fun HUH

I run into this stuff all the time

guys on the job walk up and say "whats this"

holding up all kinds of odd pieces, just the sheer

size of components now is amazing.

I'm going to post everything else to my user files

because i think this stuff is neat and because there are those

who lurk here also dont think it's so neat

                                    thanks  everybody
