Update and question
« on: March 25, 2007, 12:16:00 AM »

Here is the update: I started this project as a 12 volt system. The Alt just had too much internal impedence for a 12 or 24 volt setup.  The prop would thrash noisley in high winds because the alt just couldn't load up the blade properly. I started out with 8 mags per pole and then 12.  The last itteration has 15 mags and wired for 48 volts.  So far the gen has acted much better. I think the alt now makes enough watts to keep the prop under control.  Seen it furl rather smoothly and make close to 400 watts (6 or 7 amps @ 56 volts) without thrashing about. Never seemed to be able to get much over 100 watts before.

Here is the question: Would it be possible to use the Oatley diversion controller Ed has available across 2 batteries for 24 volt controller in a 48 volt setup? I've seen one commercial controller look at 1 battery in a 48 volt, 4 battery system.  Or could the kit be converted to work as a 48 volt controller?  I know it probably isn't a great setup but I can't really spend over 200 bucks for a Xantrex C-40 and meter front.  I'm not really utilizing the power now.  It's more of a hobby and conversation piece here in the city.

Use the circuit given by Home Power magazine, I did supply the changes to make it good for higher voltages, like 48 volts.

Thanks Nando. I searched HP mag site and found "Shunt regulator" in issue 18. Would that be the one?

It's a .jpg!  Should be OK with any viewer. I made it as bitmap in Paint and saved it as .jpg in Irfanview.

Well the image don't load for me so I can't see anything. but 15 magnets sounds odd to me, normally an even number would be used

NTL,

Billy means 15 magnets per pole.
