Can I run a Charge controller from the dump circuit
« on: October 28, 2007, 08:56:36 PM »
I have upgraded the solar end of my system again and have more solar than I need.

Since all the panels are matched, I hate to split them up to different banks. Right now I have a separate bank for small things like the vent fan in my composting toilet. I also just bought a C60 just for the solar.

I'm thinking about hooking a 7 amp charge controller to the dump circuit of the C-60 to charge a 115AH-12volt battery that will just run the fan.

See any problems with this.

No Peter, the dump load on the C-60 must be available all the time! If you put the 7 amp charge controller on the dump circuit and the 115AH-12volt battery becomes fully charged, the charge controller will disconnect the battery from the circuit, thus removing it as part of your dump load.

I don't know enough about composting toilets and the duty cycle of the fan, to be of much help, and more info is need.

Thanks Snowcrow,

That occurred to me after I posted this.

The Vent fan is currently 45 watts but I can go to a smaller one. It doesn't have a specified time it needs to run but more is better. I origionally posted this in Remote Living because of the composter, but the censors were wielding a heavy hand yesterday.

I have other options like putting it on the small wind ginny that I'm using to charge the tractor battery and a few lights in the storage area. All this is in a state of transition now. It is hooked up at a camper and I'm trying to work the bugs out until I finish the house. Then it gets moved there.

The solar was split up charging different banks until I added panels a couple of weeks ago. I melted my charge controller and then bought the C-60.

I added more yesterday and now have a little over 750 watts of matched panels and want to keep them together so I can replace the deep cycle batteries with forklift batteries.

As you can see, it's in a constant state of change right now.

Peter, I just bought four 150mm 12vdc(6-16vdc) fans for my wood stove heating system. There are 9.5 watts, 1.5amps startup, 750ma continues and moves up to 120cfm.

Link to fans:

I just think that 45 watts for a fan is a bit high in power consumption myself. I think if you were to install the 9.5 watt fan and put it on a timer, and \ or add a manual pushbutton timed switch, your small wind mill would have no problem keeping the small battery bank up to charge.

Thanks Snowcrow.

I've been looking for the round ones like that. I found the square fans at Northern yesterday but round is just easier to make a housing for.

Uh, well, since it had "controller" in the title it got resectioned. Folks seem confused on how to section things here. Stuff that should be a Diary gets posted as remote living, etc so we resection or remove them Since this is here it simply got moved. Might be worthwhile for you to look up the definition of "censors" before you toss it around too much.

Not sure how much air it needs to move.

My friend put a 60mm muffin fan in his 4" pipe. 12V, 150ma? He's happy.

Could run a small wire from the main battery to a small fan, no need for the 2nd battery or controller.

Same wire runs a 3 LED light... just enough to see what he's doing.

I don't think it needs much at all Ghurd. Just enough to maintain positive air flow and to be honest, the chimney effect in that 4" pipe should do it all by itself. If you don't mind me asking, where did your friend find the muffin fans?

Thanks

He got it from a pack rat, me.

Probably from an old computer or something.  Maybe a surplus catalog, like All Electronics or Electronic Goldmine.

Here's a great place to get those fans, and a lot of other cool 12v stuff! I have 2 of their 4" 12v fans, 106cfm, 0.3 amps.
