cheap stand alone data logger wanted
« on: November 29, 2007, 12:53:40 AM »
hi all, i have been searching for a cheap stand alone data logger. i dont want to leave a pc running 24/7 just to get some readings from 4 inputs. i want to monitor my system to check the performance of my setup.. all the ones i have seem are way to expensive or require a pc to be on all the time. the only ones i have found that might do the job are here.

http://www.tern.com/portal/content.asp?contentid=645

this would do the job but would stretch me with the programming. i am also a bit rusty on the interfaces as well. i want to log windspeed, rotor speed, voltage and current into battery. maybe temperature and wind direction if there spare inputs. someone suggested using a palm pilot, which has a serial interface. the software is freely available as well. anyone got any ideas.? i seem to remember there was a cheap data logger around a couple of years ago,but cant seem to find it.

cheers

You might check to see what 3J  has at APRS World.  This is one of his specialties.

Hello bob golding,

stretch me with the programming

Then this would a big stretch one of many micro evaluation modules:

http://www.analog.com/en/content/0,2886,762%255F%252D1%255F66633%255F0,00.html

Scroll down to: MiniKit for ADuC702x-series (ARM7®-core) Precision Analog Microcontrollers

Has analog inputs, digital inputs etc. Cost $30. has 8k bytes of ram. Expandable.

Have fun,

Scott.

A cheap laptop and USB data card will use a lot less power (down to 10W if you are careful) than a desktop PC, though probably still more than you want...

Damon;

You can get even lower on power consumption using a Linksys "Slug" network storage appliance with USB and network ports loaded up with Linux. Probably 50 ways to skin this cat without using much power.

Cheers.

The Sparkfun Logomatic Serial SD Datalogger captures either a serial data stream or up to 10 ADC channels to a SD storage card. Largest tested Card 1GB. ADC sample rate 150 Hz per channel if all 10 channels are used, 1500 Hz if one Channel is used. Serial logging up to 115200 Baud, but logging an continuous data stream at this speed could produce buffer overruns. Price $59.95 for single quantities.
