has anybody looked at these
« on: February 26, 2009, 03:45:32 AM »
Has anybody looked at those 12volt jumpbox controlers? I have to bad jumpboxes that I have had for awhile and took one apart. there is a small charge controller that you plug in with a power supply. the power supplies are nomally 14 to 18 volt input and that goes thur the controller that has a led charging indicator and when the battery get up to 14.6 volts it cutoff as not to over charge the battery. would this be possible to use with wind gennies or pv panels? It's just and idea and I hate to not use possible ready made coponents that are free.

I assume a jumpbox is a car to car charger or from a battery pack. Is that item on the left a relay or circuit breaker?

yes it is a auto jumpbox. the fuse is the item on the left. it nomally is used to charge the jumpbox. the input power is normally 14-17 dc volts at 300 to 900 mamps. i was thinking of using it to control my charging of my batties from my genny using dc power into it. these controllers have a auto shutoff at around 14.6 volts. at least that is what they do when charging the battery pack on the jumpbox. it also has a voltage meter attached to it.

divemaster;

Do Not disconnect your turbine as a form of "charge control". The turbine can freewheel to destruction. The turbine should always be connected to the batteries so it stays loaded. We generally control things by dumping [wasting] power off the batteries to keep them at safe voltages.

Might want to do some reading about this.

Would hate to see you blow up a turbine from freewheeling.

I got what you are saying. I thinking there may be away to wire the the power shutoff to a dump load to heat water heating system for my shop and greenhouse. I was thinking that maybe someone has looked at these that knows more about boards than i do an could help me with this. thanks for the info

I believe you misunderstand a dump load.

Your understanding of a dump load seems to involve stopping current from reaching the battery.

A dump load controller "Dumps" extra Battery power to a load.

Something that cuts off the extra power GOING TO the battery is OK with solar under certain conditions.

Something that cuts off the extra wind power GOING TO the battery is a disaster waiting to happen.

All the fancy crap in my 'jumpbox' controller resulted in a resistor limiting the charging current.

The manual roughly states ~ "Do not let it charge TOO LONG or the battery can over-charge".

I understand that to mean "the controller is only mentioned in the manual to sell more units, and functionly speaking is nearly pointless".

The one I have charges upto 14.6 volts and does not shut off. (I miss spoke before.) It goew to a standby and when the voltage drops below 12.95 It starts charging again. It is a jumpbox that we had at work and loaned to the ems deptment and they reversed the cables and left it that way. batery went bomb. (dummies).I was trying to figure away to use the cutout voltage peak to deviret to the dummy load will it was in standby. so there would still be a load on the mill so it would not go wild thing on me.I hate to see it go to waste. If I cannot due this I will scavage the board wfor what parts I can use.
