Barrel Darrieus suggestions wanted
« on: June 01, 2010, 04:45:07 PM »
I recently acquired a few 55gallon barrels and didn't really want to make a savonius with them. I've been thinking a 'lenz' type darrieus something along the lines of the attached pic. I'm in a 'yard art' wind zone and any suggestions in regard to making it work in 'low wind' would be greatly appreciated (ie- 60degree instead of 30 degree, reversing the leading edge of the foils, etc.). thanks in advance

Steel barrels. I printed a copy of the Lenz2 foil profile and along with inverting(from as shown on the pic) the barrel on the axle/hub, I think that is what I'm going to go with. It would only take a few cuts with a grinder and bending the leading edge around a piece of pipe to accomplish. The foil angle would then be determined by the amount of metal left after cutting loose the leading edge. I am still trying to track down a disc brake hub/axle for it ( the crippling assumption at play- "it must be built from crap"). At some point I'll probably just hit a junkyard and buy one.
