i have not made a shunt for a darsonval movement in a long time that movement looks like a 50 mv
do not connect any current or voltage to it without a shunt or it will be smoke

So how would that thing be hooked up to something that has #6 wire coming down the tower and #4 battery cable from the rectifier to the batteries?

OK, I have been screwing around with this shunt thing, I have my DMM reading DC amps, and I have a a bunch of lights and one DC motor wired up so I can put a little load on the motor and read exactly 10 amps on the DMM, so then I took a piece of 12ga solid wire and put it in the circuit, then I clipped some leads to the posts on the ammeter and clipped them to the 12ga wire, now I can get the needle to point anywhere I want to by sliding the ammeter wires around.
My next question is, if were to make a new scale and mark the point where the needle is when my DMM is reading 10 amps, will the space from 0 to 10 be the same for the spaces to 20-30-40 etc?
In other words can I take a compass and set it to the space from 0 to 10 and then step off the rest of the spaces to whatever end point I want?

fab;

On the ones I did the scale was linear. So I "think so".

It could vary between movements [meters] but it was not the case with mine.

I think it will work out that way but there are always exceptions to the rule.

Now you are having fun!

Dale ,
Here's a thread of the ones I did.
What's the top amps you expect of of your system?
I still have the 100 A meter (left side of second row in the first Pic).
You can have it, if you want it.

http://fieldlines.com/board/index.php/topic,129516.0.html

I replaced my 10 A analog meter with a digital one off of Feebay.

Bonz, I'm starting to feel guilty I'm not sending anything your way, I just got the rectifier today, I like that digital, the highest amps I've heard of from a 17 are 100-120, does that digital come with a shunt?

Dale,
I like the digital one a lot.
It came with a shunt and it's got a regulator built in so it can be powered with almost any voltage.
You  can even power it from the bank you are feeding.
It is an LED not LCD, the LCD's can fade out over time.
Mine is just a 100 A, but I thought you might need the 200A.
Bonz

When Mr. G mentioned 100+ from your mill I figured you'd need more rectifier.
You can parallel them.

Ahhhh I see, yeah I actually never thought of that, with these summer winds I'm getting no where near 100 amps, maybe if a thunderstorm blows up, I had a little brain fart today, I shut the mill down and left the headlights on I have for a manual dump load, by the time I remembered they were on they were just barely glowing and the battery voltage was around 39 volts, it's taking a long time to come back up now.

Bonz, I'm starting to feel guilty I'm not sending anything your way

On top of my wish list is a 1958 or '59 RDE 19 Johnson outboard motor.
Short shaft, electric start, remote control, 25 to 35 Hp.
I'm restoring a 1954 Feather Craft Runabout and I'd like to get a vintage motor to go on it.
Got one of those laying around collecting dust?    :)
Not to much to ask, is it..... ;)
Anybody out there know of one for sale?

I have a pull start old Johnson 15 HP that ran great last time I used it.
It takes the two hose gas tank. Original Tank I do not have. I made one to use
the motor. I have had a lot of small out board motors but kept that one because
it all ways would run when needed. Can't bet the old stuff.

I know a guy who probably does, he owns a really great marina on the Grand River just a few miles from me, the place is called Felix's Marina and Guns, it also has an antique store, there is a large building out back that I have only been in one time, at that time it had hundreds of old outboard motors dating back to the beginning, there were "motors" that would be clamped on the transom that had a crank, there was no actual motor you turned the crank which drove the prop through a gear and shaft setup.
The problem is old Bernie is notorious for not parting with any of his treasures.

Well,
If you see ol' Bernie, ask him if he's got a RDE-19 for sale.
Kinda long way to drive, currently inquiring about one outside of Atlanta,Ga.
Eight hour drive for me to Atl.
