RedRok Reconsidered
« on: August 12, 2010, 01:15:52 PM »
Last week I got this current version of the RedRok Tracker from a board  member who wishes to remain anonymous.

I made some time ducking in and out of the AC to install it in the common peanut butter jar setup.

Shown below:

This version seems to have fixed the hunting problem.

It very accurately tracks the brightest patch of sky. Early and late here I have large trees that obstruct direct sun and it will often be pointing to the middle of the open sky until the sun clears the pine tree in the AM but as soon as it clears the tree it tracks back to the sun itself.  In the evening it kind of stops tracking at the top of the treeline until dusk when it tracks back to the east. It only runs for a second or so each adjustment so it takes awhile to park.

I guess this is my official retraction of my "RedRok sucks" comments made previously.

Yeah, things change. I just change slower than most :D

Sorry for the poor photos but it was tracked on the high noon side of things so the angle is poor. Maybe get some early AM shots tomorrow with a better angle.

The wiring is temporary while I assure myself it will work properly after that I will install an outdoor box to bring the cables together in.

You might want to either paint or cover the blue part of the jar with some tape or something. The UV will eventually eat away at the lid. One of my jars started to have it's lid degraded after about a year and it's now held together with some white electrical tape.

Less bark, more wag.

The finest clear Plastic available on the planet (for the money).  A rather too small JIF P-Nut Butter Jar.

Asked the procurement officer for a larger jar next time so I can remedy the tendency to move the LEDs when putting on the close fitting cover.

do you have pics/details of your setup?  curious how you have the panels mounted to the pole and what drives the tracker...i have a bunch of c-band sat mounts and actuators that would probably do the trick for me.

More Photos here:

That main rack is 2 1/4" heavy angle iron.

I used SS nuts and bolts as standoff to avoid galvanic ugliness of iron on aluminum
