I live in Brownstown IN, and would like to speak with anyone in south central Indiana that has completed or is in the progress of building a homebrew turbine.  ;)

I don't mean to be negative, but the winds in southern Indiana are very poor.  See the wind map here    www.in.gov/oed/files/windpower1-1-12speed50mcap.pdf

True the winds in most of Indiana are poor,
but in the location I have the wind blowing almost every day and at about 10 mph.
I'm just looking for anyone with any experenice in my area.
If there is no one, fine I'll get by.

I live in the NW part of Indiana. The smallest white section in the map that was posted in an earlier reply. I'm not building one yet, just tinkering with a treadmill motor for some experience. There is a wind-farm just south of me so evidently there is enough wind, at least around here.

So the wind in IN is crap.  So what?

Can spend $1000 at the theater watching movies that will be free on TV in a few months...
Or can spend it to do something fun like a windmill.

I would hate to figure out the cost per unit of power on the FUN stuff I do !

How long until this thing pays for itself is measured in Never-Ever to the 27th power.
But it was money well spent.   ;D

I dont live in a good wind zone either. Does not stop the fun when a bit of wind cranks the old mill up. Watching a mill pivot into the wind and the blades turn into a blur makes a slow build well worth while. Consider solar to occupy time in between wind gusts.

Very true replies.  Mine won't pay for itself in probably forever.  More of a fun hobby for me.  I just wanted to make sure he knew that the area he lives in is rated a 4-5 ms @ 50m.  It is definitely a fun hobby.  Go for it.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob;

I have always looked at this as a hobby that happens to return some value. Most of that "value" for me lies in simply trying to be part of the solution rather than just another part of the problem. Doing the right thing and all that.

Choosing the most profit over choosing the right thing is a systemic problem in this world that I choose not to  be part of!

Just the view from here.

I for one am asking myself why you seek to only share the experiences of a very very minute part of the world, this board and others have a multitude of people with experience in many varied wind speed areas.

As many others have said, it is better to be spending your money on something positive than being part of the problem.  I like to put windmills up, even though I live in the woods, under major power lines, in an airport landing zone, and in a 35ft restricted height area.  I could go spend my money on video games and movie tickets, but I get more enjoyment out of building things and watching them work ( fail  mostly :) ).
