old battery problems
« on: August 09, 2010, 09:33:27 PM »
I was give two old  tractor Battery's off a big farm tractor they  are 1235 amp 12 volt the one is ok the other one we have been trying to bring it back to life for about three to four months.
 It will come up to 9 or 10 volts  back and forth but not gaining.. we did a gravity test and two cells were down.
I mixed up some Epsom salts in hot water to desolve it and added it to the two weaker cells  left it on a 20 amp charger over night and the next day .
We did another gravity test and the weakest cell checks in the good the other cells show almost over charge but it wont take much or put out much amperage. We also ran a desulfator on it for several months.
dose anyone have any sughestions on bringing this back to life???

Take it in for recycling and apply the core charge refund to a new one?  B-)

I agree with ULR,
2 dead cells is a lost cause, as you have already proven.
Might salvage a battery with one "near dead" cell, but 2 dead cells is a lost cause... as you have already proven.

In case you don't believe ULR or G;

Recycle it and apply the core charge to a fresh one.

Of course if you enjoy swimming upstream then by all means play with it awhile but your chances of success are not very good.

Battery values at the scrap yard went from 10 to 11 to 15-US Cents per pound here in the last couple of weeks...

do you know of a webb site where i could track scrap metal market price's?

Well the big old battery will probably sit by the test mill til this fall when we may add more battery's for winter.
it will lite the  china volt meter in my combiner box there but thats about it.
Thank you all for your input on this subject. If we fail to revive it  it wont be because we didn't try!

Isaiah - the London Exchange metals prices are available on the internet but what really matters is what your local companies are willing to pay; they have to cover transportation and overhead to stay in business so what they pay is not very close to the official previous days' price.
