1.5hp motor conversion
« on: November 12, 2010, 03:40:00 AM »
picked up a nice little 115 volt- 1.5hp motor--single phase--two single phases that is..
4 pole........made a new rotor from a piece of pipe..super glued on the mags- double stacked...
then i buried them in epoxy putty..great stuff cures as hard as rock in just a few minutes..
i going to use the blades and tail from my old duel rotor--just had to make a mount for the alt..
used 2by4s--glued and screwed togeather..
i tested the alt on my pedgen--had no problem lighting up a 450watt--28v landing light..[just short of breath and legs felt like rubber] :}
just need to redo my blades--sand and stain.........heres a few picts...

I think that is the ticket ,to test small Alternators under peddle power .It translates to less that 6 feet diameter blades with little or no tsr . You should be in the 200 to 600 Rpm range with a solid Air flow . Turbulent winds kind of are equivalent to returning to  slow climb ( under load).
How do the winds run in Alaska ? Do you have long periods of calm ?

i mainly use my windgens  for my motorhome......i drive down the coastal road and park..seems to be a good wind their most of the time.
gets a little scary at times when the wind picks up to 40-60+ mph......i always use a furling tail==my old mill survied 70+mph winds
with a furling tail.. play it safe or dont play at all.................
and yes pedgens seem to work great for a test bed--or just having some fun--i built one for my motorhome as well--saved my butt a few
times when the wind died down and my batts got to low to start the engine--takes about 5 minutes of peddling to crank the old girl over............

heres a shot of the airgap--super tight..
no real cogging even thou the mags are straight..might be because they dont quite line up on the lams..

Hello!

One quick question, and a comment.

I see that the 'end bells' are open,  Are you going to seal the motor, if so.. how?

Your statement..  "picked up a nice little 115 volt- 1.5hp motor--single phase--two single phases that is.."
Is a bit confusing.   I understand single phase but "two single phases" leaves me at a loss.

450 watts is close to 2/3 horse power,  you're in good shape!

its a split phase motor....two pairs of four coils..
4 wires out..one phase puts out higher volts-start coils?????
havent been on the trails or mountain bike for awhile--when you get in your 50s -you lose it quick-and it takes longer to get it back.......
time to hit the trails!!!!!!!

Nice job hiker.

Please share more details: size of neos used, cut in rpm, plans for it, etc.

Thanks for sharing,

the mags are 18mm by 3mm...i double stack them..about a 1/4 " thick.........
you get 3 for 2.98...  not sure of cut in speed..fairly low rpm..can light up a 50 watt 12v headlite by hand using a pair of vice grips to spin it over..not full bright but close..with a hand drill --it easly lights up the headlite on its slow speed setting..
and you know what it can do on my pedgen...........
fun stuff....its all painted up and ready for a test.........might mount it on the back of my bronco..and drive down to the coast... :]
heres a pict. of the mags and the putty i use to secure the mags....great stuff...
