I have an old 15A 117V angle grinder It has a 4:1 reduction gearbox has anyone tried to use one of these to make a gen. or maybe just use the gearbox.

Probably "work" but my guess is both duty cycle and efficiency will make it not very practical. But the fun factor may offset that for something to do and to find out.

Let us know how it works if you do it.

It's funny, just the other day I was repairing the chord on one of my Makita electric drills, and looking at the gear reduction as well...

Tom's right fairly light and not up to 100% duty, but still interesting.

Other than the gearbox, the motor in most of those is not suitable to make a PMA.
