« on: February 05, 2011, 10:30:06 AM »
Hi guys its took me a while to find this forum so thanks a lot Neil from reuk.co.uk
I have to motors from a computer tape bank i think they may be called stepper motors?? please correct if wrong
Im just wondering if these would be any good in helping my solar panels charge 4 x 24A batteries the labels on the motors say..

COPAL LBT79-001 DV12V 2.0A

There are 6 wires coming from the motor and thats about it i havent a clue where to start but cant wait to get stuck in with the help of you all hopefully,

I can take pictures etc if need regards

Yes, pics will help.

Check the resistance between all the wires.
See if there are 2 separate groups of 3.

24A is the same as AAA?

Sorry.  I do not believe it will make any power.

It is not a stepper motor.
It is a 3 phase servo motor.
Probably removed from a tape drive backup device?

After rectification, at 600RPM (maybe higher), mine will make 3VDC open circuit, 3A short circuit.
With a 1.5V load (such as one AAA battery), the output is almost nothing.

If 24A is the same as AAA,
maybe keep looking for a stepper motor.
There is at least one in every junk inkjet printer.  Copy machines and fax machines too.

looks like a easy motor to rewire--with smaller gauge wire-more turns--make a few single phase groups--then rectife..........
should be able to get a few amps output......................?

Ah great ive got more inkjets and fax machines than PCWORLD are there any type i really want to look out for or are they all just as good ish!!

And now somebody says rewire my old ones??? im only after 12v 50w for starters i guess which way to go??

Ive got some really big SA3 printers at work so may have to break one ;) and take a look inside

Thanks again for all your help guys

Usually the older the better.  Newer designs tend to improve on the efficiency... ergo smaller components that need less power... ergo motors that put out less power when used opposite their normal role.

Be on the lookout for older laser printers.  They tend to have some that are a decent size.

I agree with Zap.  Older is better.

Just try each one and see what it does.  The data about the motor has almost no importance for guessing output as a generator.

Not sure 50W is possible from a "stepper motor".  Some people have managed 10W.  I don't think I ever managed an honest 2W at 12V with a standard looking stepper.

Bigger ones are called "servo motors".  There are many types of servo motors.

The square laminated versions tend to have bearings.  The round ones in a can usually have bushings.

Brilliant thanks for all your help im just more confused than ever lol i could really do with about 50w if possible but if not i dont mind for my first project ive been looking on ebay but not a clue whats best for my needs ive found the following would any of these be any good do you think...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STEPPER-MOTOR-12V-6WIRE-TYPE-800-STEP-NEW-/120679016590?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item1c1907a88e#ht_611wt_1139

But not a clue as always i guess its a very steep learning curve!!!

The stepper, by my experience, will maybe make 20 to 50ma at 12V.

The scooter motor may make a little bit of power, like a couple amps, but the spped is usually so high on them that they are not practicle to attempt (except for fun).

50W is pretty much up into Ametek class.

Might try a UK-type treadmill motor, if you FIRST read honest reports about what actually works.
Everybody selling a treadmill motor thinks the one they have is perfect, but very few are suitable at all.

For 50W out of a motor, think about things that weigh 3 or 4 or 5kg.

Be careful what you buy.  The market is flooded with dishonest or unknowledgeable salesman.

Something to think about.
What wind speed do you want to get 50W?
How big is the biggest blade and tower and related assemblies do you want?
And is that possible?
Windstuffnow Ed has a page with some reasonable facts,
