I sketched out a Picaxe version of the circuit. I still need voltage dividers, power supply, and tying I/O to ground so the option saves very little in solder work.  Promised features of programming exceed what I want to do with it too.  Starting with an arduino still leave the input "shield" and program to do.  So the time and ease is all equal to me and these options look more like personal prefs instead.
