Replacement diode for pv panel?
« on: August 10, 2011, 02:31:14 PM »
I've just got a GV 120W panel (12V) cheap with one fried (shorted) bypass diode. The diode are marked "ST 1010", but i can't find much data for it...

I do however, have some MBR2045CT (Dual) Schottky diodes from an old computer psu, rated 45V, 20A. (TO-220)

In short; Can i use those?

I would think so, but at 10 amps you will need a good sized heatsink.  Is the other one a TO-220 as well?

No, the original looks like a typical round 4-5A diode. And i mentioned the wrong type number for the original diode! The right number are "SL 1010"...

Normally i manage to find data sheets on the net, but this one eludes me, so i think it's special made for the junction box that is installed on the panel.
Here's the junction box: (which comes with diodes installed)

http://www.te.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?S=25224&M=PPROP&P=&BML=10576,17560,17838,23345,25159&LG=1&PG=1&IDS=371355,371357,371358,371359,466063,371348,371362,371354,371363,371367,371364,466064,466445,466446,466290,466291,466292,466293,466294,466295&N=13

But then let me ask this;
What kind of dioes are normally used in solar panels?!

The factory diode is 10A 1000V.

Got " A " 12V panel means it is a 12V system to me.

Bypass diodes serve no purpose in a 12V system.
I usually tell people to cut them out before they cause headaches.

This one already caused a headache, but you know what it is, that it serves no purpose in a 12V system, and that it can be removed.
Cut it off.
Cut the other one off too.
Problem solved.

;D

Yes, it's for a 12V system (sorry; a bit imprecise there...) ;), and i know those diodes are there for bypassing partly shaded panels when several panels are in series... :)
I've already changed the diode with the one i had, and it seems ok; no temperature difference between the diodes when connected to battery, short circuited, or partly shaded... So i'll leave them in until they act up... ;)

Thanks! ;)

since there shall be a current drop of around 100mA cause of the diode.

if i had to make a solar controller between the panel and batteries instead of diode will there be a back voltage from the batteries to the panel when panel is shaded ?????

thanks

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/278186375/High_Voltage_diode_SL1010_10mA_10KV_.html

The diode by itself is here. 10ma at 10KV max reverse voltage.

That is probably a lightning protection diode. Does the panel look like it took a hit?

No, no burn marks, except where the diode was fastened; the diode had shorted out and one leg was poorly connected. :)
