Arco 16-2000/Siemens SR-90 Compatibility?
« on: July 04, 2011, 11:32:52 PM »
      I've got 8 late 70's Arco 16-2000's that were never used, and have 4 late 90's Siemens SR-90's. The big question is- "are they compatible to series-parallel?" The Arco's are 33 watts, open circuit of 20.5 volts, and current of 2.6 amps. The Siemens are 90 watts, open circuit of 21.6 volts, and current of 21.6 amps. The Arco's have 33 round cells, the Siemens have 36 round cells. Is this a holy marriage? Joe

With the age of the panels in question, I'd probably test each of them first. A lot of things can happen to panels >30 yrs old.

We do however, need a little more information on the overall plan.
Desired voltage?
Controller(s)?
Grid Tie Inverter?
Non Grd Tie battery bank (voltage?)

     Rover, thanks for the reply. My "to be" battery bank is a 24 volt setup- four 6 volt Trojan T-105's in series parallel configuration, with a Bergey XL-1 wind generator control box that accomodates a solar input at 24 volts, completing an off-grid hybrid wind/solar control unit....... I've tested all the panels, and they are all within 5% of their rated power. I do, however have 2 of the 8 Arco panels designated as M-51's, the updated version of the 16-2000. These M-51's have 35 round solar cells, instead of the 33 on the 16-2000's. I'll be running an Exeltech 600 watt inverter off the batteries. Hope this helps, Thanks, Joe.

Joe;
In short the answer would be yes, they can be married.
However, with the difference is wattage and types, it would be best to series them up into pairs of like panels with blocking diodes. You might also keep an eye on the controller, make sure it can be used with the current with incoming wind as well.
That's some pretty impressive finds of panels never been used from the 70's. Find them in a barn under a 70s Mustang that a little ole lady drove to church on Sundays did ya  ;D.

Make sure a pair the cells as best a possible. OV will be up in 40V range, make sure the controller can handle it.
Best of Luck
