iButton temperature measurement fun (and aerogel too)...
« on: October 25, 2011, 03:39:23 PM »
Hi,

I've just done a round more of aerogel drylining, and I'm trying to measure if it's doing any good using some dinky iButton sensors about 15mm/0.5" in diameter that will take up to 2048 readings are regular intervals.

Here's the latest graph with iButtons below the floor, in the room, just above the room ceiling (under the loft insulation) and above the loft insulation:

Here's the write-up so far:

PS. The two sprogs are back in their rooms for the first time tonight since the drylining started, and all seems to be well!

PPS. No heating on yet, though outside temps did dip to 4C a few days ago (see purple line on graph).

Damon;
Nice work. One or two graph items that would be nice to see as well.
Outside temp and heating system run time.
The Outside versus inside would be a good way to tell just how well the new updates are keeping Mr. Frost out.
The heating system run time would only be to see how quickly the insulation is allowing the heater to bring room(s) backup up to preset  warmth levels.

Those iButton units look interesting. Would be fun to use them as logic levels for individualized zone heating.
 First time I saw them I thought they were button batteries  ;).
Cheers;

Hi,

I don't have one outside: the one in the loft is meant to be a proxy for that (and looking at its temperature swings I think that it is).

The heating hasn't been on at all yet, but I think it'll be very obvious from the underfloor probe as it's within a few inches of the rad pipework.

Another update, well into mission 2, sampling once per hour so this will run for about 3 months (2048 samples max):

Loft temperature does seem to reflect external temperature reasonably well (note dip to 2C in loft while it got to about 0C outside) but I may repurpose one of the sensors (3) to something else since it so closely tracks (2) in the room.  (3) might monitor the bedroom next door or actual outside temperature.
