Best Generator/Motor for a small windturbine
« on: October 23, 2011, 01:03:27 PM »
Hi,
I'm making a small windturbine last year thesis.
I'm searching for a "good" generator/motor , price does not matter.
With a "good" generator/motor i mean one that produce at least 1v/25RPM ,
and reach around 30V at 300RPM and make at least 100W.
I found a lot of example's with the Ametek 30V motor but i never found 1 for sale.
I searched and mailed around but found nothing that i'm almost sure it will be good for me.
So my question is what type and maybe the website or store i can find that type.
If you have tips/experience with this i realy want to know them
thanks in advance  ;)

Hi IvoV,

A good place o start is the FAQ on the subject.

http://fieldlines.com/board/index.php/topic,143574.0.html

Personally, I fan of the GE ECM motor, which is pretty much in the wattage range you are looking for, of course depending on wind.

You may want to search the board for GE ECM or just ECM , pay particular attention to some of Jerry's posts and Ghurd's as well as some others.

Treadmill motors are also a possibility, check EBay, but the tend to be a crap shoot even if they do meet the specs.

Best of luck,

I have not used this DC motor in a wind application, but in others where its construction, and performance are first rate.
Its a Glentek GM6000 series, 6090-50.You can look up the specs on line.It is still in production, and you should be able to order direct, if not then through the Vernon tool company.
I am only suggesting this as you did say price does not mater. Right off the shelf it should meet your spec, and then some. From memory a decade back when I last ordered one it was 1500 or so, and around 120 volts at 2400 rpm.
Good news is at 4.5 or so hp it may be re purposed for a ebike or other ev project when your thesis project is done.If you can order direct from the factory ask to have the encoder/resolver assy left off the end as you might be able to get it a little cheaper.

If price is no object... I'd object to $1500.00

4.5 Hp is going to be a large motor (no I didn't go look at the specs).

There is a 1HP motor on Ebay, GE ECM Motor, at a sub ~100.00 price current auction, think it ends today  , That If I needed one I would probably by looking at ...

hint... Has over 50 of them. But you can find them anywhere.. if anything it seems to be easier recently.

But do your own research...I remember that your this is for your thesis... I in no way want you to take a single piece of advice or direction.

(Disclaimer... I have no relation to the seller or sellers on EBay, information provided is solely my opinion. )

one that produce at least 1v/25RPM ,
and reach around 30V at 300RPM and make at least 100W.

A motor that makes 1 volt at 25 rpm, will make 12 volts at 300 rpm

A motor that makes 30 volts at 300 rpm, will make 2.5 volts at 25 rpm
