Connection problems?
« on: January 11, 2012, 04:18:40 PM »
Trying to get an idea of how widespread the effects are.

Yes, the answers will be skewed - already had 3 people complain they can't access the site to vote. So those having perpetual problems don't get a vote.

I don't get the problem much, now a lot that do.

THen again I have it my hosts file, and before that my ISP DNS appeared to cache it

Adding it to your hosts file invalidates your vote.

Since the board uses absolutes for everything, even having the IP doesn't do much good.

Looks like adding it to hosts is the only way. :(

The poll has become largely irrelevant now that FINALLY someone has fixed the underlying problem.
Perhaps people, if they still wish to contribute, could comment only on the period of let say, the period from about newyears until the re-appearance of this site.

What's gong wrong with the forum website?

Today - all day - Thursday I was unable to bring up the forum page that I have accessed since the launch of new forum software.

The screen repeatedly descended into a 404 error fault and Google just could not find fieldlines forum.

Even as I type the Forum front page is nothing like the previous one that i have used for months on end. The pagination is different and gone are things like Donate.

Why is this?

My computer has not changed any settings or software for months.

What are you seeing??

Hi David,
For one thing it great to see that donation icon gone as all us fools that donated before didn't deserve to be put thru the ringer that the owners have done.
If that donation icon EVER comes up again I do advise members to ignore it as things have gone from bad to worse and the owners are just trying to gloss this whole charade over by putting an asylum candidate in charge and as a precedent has been done history repeats.....
Don't be surprised if connection problems do continue as that piece of string they use up in hillbilly land might of got eaten by a critter.
If you really want to know the whole story come on into IRC and we can explain a few things and theres no worry about the the mod's(except Damon) or so-called admins as they aint got the balls to come into IRC.

Cheers Bryan

I don't even know how to access IRC. I have seen it many times and wondered what it is all about!

What on earth has gone wrong with a forum I have enjoyed so much for so many years?

I am much confused!

Just my opinion, but this would be a good place for a guy named 'admin' to make a post in this thread

Whats going on with the board has to do with a scheduled maint on the server side of things. Im not going to be that active as far as posts go. We,ve stilll got some work to do to get the forum ad module and things like that going.

hello david ,
it has been confusing !
a bit like the soviet union under stalin.
you know somethings going on but are afraid to ask.

it seems there was political purge,
maybe even an attempt at a coup d"etat

some disgruntled monitors and members (hard liners?) have started a copy cat site.
strange thing is ,they are using this site as a platform to promote it!

i never could figure out what irc was all about.
i think it's  a place you can go to whip or get whipped.

i had to sign in this morning but no bigi
i like the new face lift on the forum.
cheers!

There was never a coup d'etat.
Some people who felt passionately about the board, and the way it was being ignored finally got a response from the "home office".
Unfortunately, the response was a kneejerk reaction - and virtually all moderators and admins were demoted/ejected/sacked without notice.

Your so-called "copy-cat site" was simply an enthusiast trying to figure out what all the fuss was about the claims of great pain and suffering in a migration, and how hard SMF was to set up. It took virtually no time to set up. The changes here, and the possibility of putting some useful content on the alternate site, saw it very roughly set up and it went live later that day.

So rather than trying to figure it out, you (like so many others) lash out at, make entirely false assumptions about, and attack those things you don't understand.

I can see why they made you an admin. You have the same mindset.

For those who are capable of thinking for themselves, and have an interest in the appropriate use of technology, IRC predates *EVERY SINGLE WEB-BASED FORUM*.
IRC is basically a real-time chat system. It supports a large number of people who can discuss a wide variety of things with eachother, in real time, over very low capacity links (even 2400 bps modems work perfectly well with IRC).
One of the "problems" with IRC is that you can't go back and suppress comments that the administrators don't like. You can't expunge views you don't agree with, edit a persons views or posts.

DavidHK, I'll try to prepare you a quick summary of the last few months. It'll probably shed some light on things.

Yesterday I got an error from the server itself and was then bounced to the front page of otherpower. Googles's cache wasn't that old. Other times I have gotten a hard 404 that must be coming from a poisoned DNS server, because it's instant. No delay trying to look it up. Closing Firefox, clearing cache and cookies and a restart fixed that. My bookmark of this forum used to be a numeric url, but now it's simply http://www.fieldlines.com/board/

My browser does show the old numeric while loading the page.
