73 mph wind and a funnel cloud no problem!
« on: January 17, 2012, 12:34:42 PM »
Just a note to say Thank you for building one hell of a machine ;D

My 12 footer up on the 93ft tower just had some fun with a funnel cloud that looked like it was maybe a 100 feet above the turbine.
took a pic with my cell phone but you can't really tell from it.
Wind speed reported by the news was between 65 an 73 mph.
The turbine was on! and was spinning like a top sideways, as it should have been.
Went out to check everything and the tower and turbine are standing straight like nothing happened.

Great job you guys!
Oh so now I know the dump load works too.

isn't wind fun?

That is good to hear!  We're in for a wind event I think starting tonight, with predicted gusts of 80mph, ramping up to 95 mph tomorrow.  I will shut down the machine before bed tonight I think.
If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

I can't say I have ever seen any wind past 65 mph in my area.... If you had 80-100 mph winds in NW PA, every tree and every power line would vaporize  :-\

I think your experience shows that your wind turbine furls correctly too :)

My Jacob has been in winds to about 70, I think, and at first, I was REALLY paranoid about it....but it always furls (the blades) & never comes apart, so I'm pleased. Just amazing to go out & watch the wind whip at it & it never comes apart. (So far!)
