GE Tach generator as generator
« on: February 23, 2012, 11:57:32 AM »
Has any one of you used a tach generator as a windmill? I have this GE 50V / 1000rpm, sounds good, but have not see anyone using them, any advice?

This is a link you can see a pic and some specs, but no amp spec is here

Ieeen,
Not an expert but here's what I think---
The tach/motor you have is probably made to provide a voltage per rpm and used for technicals reasons. It isn't going to probably produce much in the way of amperage. A way for you to get a rough idea if the motor you want to use, is to divide the RPM'S by the voltage to give you a ratio of how many RPM'S /VOLT you will get as a windmill. In this case 1000RPM'S divided by the 50VOLTS=
20 RPM'S for every volt you would get. If you multiply that number timeS 15 VOLTS needed to start charging a battery you would get 300 RPM'S.  I believe you would need a very fast (2) bladed rotor for acceptable charging batteries. Finally, you may not get enough amperage to charge a normal battery but, do it for the fun and enjoyment.
As an experiment it would work OK and you would learn a ton of knowledge that could apply to your next project. Have fun and--------

Bvan1941,

I am going to test the PM generator this weekend, and see the amps at 300 rpm, I will keep you updated.
this is my first project, I already have 3 150w solar panels, 4 6v 220 ah golf cart batteries and a 3000w xantrex marine inverter, I still need the charge controlers and the turbine to complete my setup.
Depending on the test results, I may continue with this generator, or search for an other option, once I decide, the next steep would be the blades design, anyway is fun to do the research, thank you for your reply, and let You know about the results

I had some.
Maybe GE (but a big name brand).  Made in USA.
Roughly the size of a long Ametek.  5/16" or 1/4" shaft.
100V/1000RPM.  Individually marked, ie: 99.8V/1000RPM.

They are intended to generate a VERY accurate V/RPM.
They are not intended to make amps.

The coil resistance was very high.
Seems like they would only put out 200 or 250ma.
