3 or 4 Guys?
« on: June 20, 2012, 11:43:41 AM »
I'm looking at a 3 leg, triangular lattice tower. Would I use 3 guys, one for each leg, or 4?  Thanks

you can use 3 guy wires, but if you are planning on a tilt up tower you will need 2 extra temporary guy wires inline with the hinge for tilt up/down

I understand the need for the two temporary guy wires, and yes it will be a tilt up. Could it be raised and lowered with 3 guy wires if tension was kept on all three? When raising one would be "pulled" as the other two were slowly released with tension? When lowering, two would be "pulled" and one would be slowly released? Thanks

You could do it with 3 but you will need some intelligent helpers. I see to many problems to treat it as a viable idea.

There is not a lot of difficulty using 3 guys with a triangular tower. You can put three on the supports and ideally you need an extension bracket opposite one vertex for the last guy..

There are so many things to think about when raising and lowering that it is best to keep things simple. When the side anchors are not lined up with the pivot point it becomes difficult with 4 guys. Having three would need 3 people on winches to do it properly.

That should have said "there is not a lot of difficulty using 4 guys with a triangular tower.

If you must use 3 then I would seriously consider the extra temporary guys rather than tryiong to control 3 guys at once.

The tower is 44 feet high, with a piece of 1 1/2 inch pipe added to the top. Mounted on top will be an Air-X. The tower is a Delhi DMX-44N medium duty tower. Total tower weight is approx. 200 pounds. A tilt- up, hinged base will be added. Thanks again
