Another CFL turned into a LED
« on: August 08, 2012, 09:03:38 PM »
Wife found a nice brass three bulb table lamp she wanted to use t our 12V camp.  I had a 5M roll of the smaller3825 SMD LED.  Wound 60 LED around a thinwall 4 inch aluminum tube from a China outdoor umbrella and glued it into an old CFL base.  A 5M roll is about $10 shipped so that makes a 60 LED lamp about $2 for a 4W lamp.

4 watts is bright enough to light a room. I use a 1.8 watt that has 18 smd's to light my apartment, but it's not as bright as the old 12v 5 watt cfl that comes with the Harbor Freight 45 watt solar kit.

If you want blindingly bright, this one from eBay should do it nicely.

OH: good one!

Now try the colour-changing LED strips instead.  B^>

The fixture is three way so that is up to 180 LED total.  But the lamp shade inside is reflective metalic gold and with three of them on is just a nice warm light level for playing cards.  I have had these a while and any future purchase will be using 5050 LED that are worth the extra cost.  The 3528 are nice in thy don't really need a heatsink so they can be stuck on something like wood.

OH;
Very NICE!!
I like the way the LEDs were staggered. Did you do this on purpose? and how well does that help keep out the shadows?.
To me that's the biggest difference going from Edison and CFLs to LEDs is the need to scatter the light so the whole room gets light.

The lights Rich H. Built for our Philippines trip back in 2010, were 3 watt and 4 of those were enough to light an entire school class room.
