Genny using Hard Drive magnets
« on: April 20, 2013, 06:06:29 AM »
I don't actually remember the date I put this genny up, but the original pics of it going up were dated around Nov 2007.

It looks like the fibreglass cracked, letting in moisture then the hard drive magnets rusted and swelled.
Finally rubbing through the coils.

Not too bad for a genny made from junk, and running continuously since then without being taken down.

I will have to get busy and rejuvenate it.

Thanks for the pictures.  I would be interested in seeing the original pictures.  I was thinking about trying to make something with some of the disc drive magnets that I salvaged.

Thanks for posting the pictures.  It looks like I am going to need more magnets if I want to build something as large as you did.  Good job.

opo and go4it,

here a couple of pics of hard drives and a few of the magnets from I got from them.
A few years ago I worked at a recycling place where I had access to literally thousands of old hard drives.

I used to pull them apart, get the magnets out and then give the rest back to the recycle centre for scrap metal.
So nothing really lost in scrap value and I got thousands of rare earth magnets out of it.

Because there are so many varieties if hard drives and magnets, I used to pile them up on a metal bar in similar shapes till I had
sufficient quantity for my magnet rotors.

Then you have to cut them all in half so you can align all the north and south poles.
Use a non magnetic very thin cut off wheel in your angle grinder.

Keep working at it.

Incredible!
That's a LOT of HDD magnets.
Nice job on the genny!

So roughly how many watts did she put out?

Who says "ya can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear", I think you proved them wrong ...  :D
Keep us posted on how the revival project goes.

Sorry,
I meant to say that it often hit 40 amps into my 12 volt battery bank.
Power =ExI = 12x40 = 480 watts.

Thanks for the info. Mick!
I always appreciate seeing folks re-purpose/ reuse stuff in their projects.
It's a matter of necessity for some of us but all too many just won't take the time or put out the effort involved in doing something like this.
Great work and good luck with rebuilding 'er!
