New PV Technology

Wow:   http://www.engineering.com/ElectronicsDesign/ElectronicsDesignArticles/ArticleID/6501/Record-Breaking-Solar-Cell-Approaches-45-Efficiency.aspx

It's finger-tip sized now, but if this can be scaled up...  Total game changer potential.

Only works in direct full sunlight, but the jump in efficiency will pay for the necessary tracking system 4 times faster.
No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.
System spec: 135w BP multicrystalline panels, Xantrex C40, DIY 10ft (3m) diameter wind turbine, Tri-Star TS60, 800AH x 24V AGM Battery, Xantrex SW4024

NICE! Not totally new though. There's been R&D of separate wavelength PVs for more than a decade.
IT is nice to see they're working on the plate to plate adhesion issue. That has been the biggest issue for some time now.

Direct sunlight means in orbit or the desert. Most likely in orbit. The military and other satellite users would be happy with smaller lighter power supplies.

I saw some panels at an auction about a year ago that were about 30-40% efficient they were approximately 3 ft x 3 ft and about 1 ft thick. They had frensel lenses in front and big heat sinks on the back. As I recall they were somewhere between 400 and 500 W.
