Pumping water with excess power

(1/1)

MIgardener:

Right now I just have a small (35 watt) solar system. But I plan on adding a wind turbine soon. I was thinking of possibly using a pump as a dump load, to pump water from a creek into barrels to water my garden with. My biggist concern with this would be that there is a lot that could go wrong with a pump, compared to a simple heating element.

Do you think this would be a good idea or an unnecessary risk?

DamonHD:
There is more to go wrong, yes.

However, there are pumps designed to be driven directly from PV, so maybe you need not worry about the electrical part as long as you don't cycle power on and off much.
