Hello!

I've designed a small wind turbine which should absorb 10-20 watts at 450-600 rpm (depending on the tip speed ratio I end up deciding on). I need some help with places to look, and the type of generator I should aim for that will give good reliability.  I would rather go direct drive and avoid the gears but I can't find anything that fits these specifications, any help is appreciated!

For this kind of power, I would consider stepper motors.

For anyone interested, I found this little guy

Assuming ~60% efficiency it should take about 18W and output 12W at 500RPM

That 500RPM to get 6V is a bit steep.
Most stay away from that kind of speed.

Here's a link to our classifieds and what you can get for about $75/US.

Being that your flag shows you to be in New Zealand, I'm certain there's something similar available closer that USA :).
Otherwise go looking for an ECM motor, unless of course you have a special need for the alternator to be small.
