Shut off switch

i want to change the way I shutdown my 12v windmill. I wonder if I can get away with leaving the ground connected and adding a two way switch that connects the windmill positive to either the battery positive or the common ground?

So the mill is either connected to the battery or shorted? I guess that would work - but make sure it's a proper break-before-make switch, and make absolutely sure you can't confuse the connections to the switch 'cos you don't want to short the battery to gnd instead

I guess you're talking about a DC mill? I was told that shorting a DC mill like that was not good. High speeds may burn the mill up. I believe it was Ghurd that
suggested to load the mill with some lights to slow it down first.

I try not to stop it if it is spinning quite fast by I have had to stop it in a high wind and it stopped without incident.
