Use a 5 volt motion sensor with a 5 volt regulator board in front of it for a stable voltage. Then use a 5 volt relay with contacts that can handle your load. Or 12 volt and same setup

Thanks for the replies. I ordered some 1N4004 diodes from ebay. Using the openers brain is over my head. I already have the 24 volt motion sensor and a relay with a 24 volt coil so I'll continue to pursue that route.
