Welcome to spring in MN...
« on: April 14, 2018, 05:35:04 PM »
10+" of snow, blizzard conditions, I have a 4 foot tall drift 2 feet out from the front door to shovel when the wind dies... I should be starting tomato plants fr the garden but hesitating... not sure of the ground will be warm enough by the end of May at this rate...

Calgary.
Yesterday's radio gardening show instructed listeners to pile more snow on the tulip shoots to protect them overnight, since it would be below freezing again.
Everyone was aware of how absurd the interview sounded, including the radio show host and guest.

We had freezing rain on Saturday and  to continue today followed by heavy rain.  They are calling it a historic weather system.  The flowers here are up  - 3 this morning.

From none except shaded drifts and plow ridges to 18-inches everywhere... and more coming.

This may not look exceptional, can't picture what the 25-40mph winds scoured away.

18"++ of snow, wind gusts peaked at 70mph, 6' drifts...

Snow plow driver buried the plow in front of my house this morning. Had to get the city front end loader to dig him out. My garage created a 4+ foot tall drift 30' long in the street and when he hit that wet heavy snow that is parked on top of mud it didn't work.

Streets in town are a mud pit, after last falls sewer and water line construction things are a mess. And now they are not going to pave until next year!

I called the co-op, they are bringing up the skid steer mounted blower. Mine choked on this wet heavy crap. I shoveled through a 6' long drift to get to the garage and that was enough!

Had to blow out one foot plus of heavy wet snow for 100 feet of my driveway.  My 29 horsepower 4 wheel drive TYM diesel tractor with 5 foot snow blower made short work of it.  (Warning - Don't buy the blower.  It's a bad design.  The fan is consuming it's housing.  Just a scaled up version of a two foot blower.)   8)

Co-op blower broke, ate a rock and they had to order parts. So it was ramming speed and plow it with the truck bumper and tailgate! Made it through but that was one rough ride!

Gee,thanks for the lovely scenery pics.

Tell me, how do you put up with that sort of freezing weather, I'm on the Gold Coast  ,sort of sub tropical east coast Oz . We never see that white stuff ..

I do light my wood fire from soon to ,say, October, mainly to keep the chill away ,and my endless supply of firewood helps, I guess.( I live on a rural acerage )..

Thanks for the photos, was an education for us sunburn't locals.

Gold Coast,   beautifull one day , perfect the next ..

Bruce - No bad weather just poor clothing choices so it is plain old 'mind over metabolism'!

The 65°C climates you worked in to earn the right to be in the Gold Coast didn't melt ya so a little -30°C wouldn't hurt (much) either.

A delight Southerners might be missing, the joys of moving ceramic water sand forty feet elsewhere... 360cc of petrol powered goodness.

^^ severe cold & bare-handed filming, just glad I didn't damage the camera...

I forgot to mention that I'm located one mile south of Lake Superior and about one half mile west of the Portage Shipping canal in Houghton County Michigan.  Total snow fall for the winter: 314 inches and counting.   :'(

The Weatherunderground says that Houghton County Michigan has flood warnings in effect.  No surprise!

The Mississippi River will flood this spring when all that snow and ice thaws. It can't all soak in.

Most of it has melted in MN! Supposed to be 80 here Monday so the little that is left in shaded areas will go fast.

I had to read it twice!! It sure does!
I'd thought you would hide then in the old fridge(s)  :o.

St Louis is watching the rivers too, just in case.

... Except watch the wind turbine go.  My batteries were topped off before the sun came up (we had the same wind you did, Sunday, just a bit upwind of y'all in MN)

Six months between 65°F//18.3°C here, and seven months seven days between 80°F//26.6°C.  Hard to believe two weeks ago there was 22"//560mm new snow down.  This year the tulips were pushing up before snowdrop flowers & catnip, the weeping willows that usually are 10 days advanced got tied in greening up. Saw the first Goldfinches and bats yesterday, spiders and wasps today.
