I'm really intrigued by your idea.  I've also been thinking of ways to make it simpler/cheaper.

How does this look to you?

The resistors do the step-down.  The capacitor is optional but may reduce the blinking.  The diode in series with the LED is not crucial, but I don't trust a LED alone with 120VAC.  The fuse is not shown in the circuit but I think it's a VERY good idea to have them.

I eliminated the capacitor.  I shouldn't have done that.  I also added a fuse instead.

That last circuit that you posted works OK. You might need to increase or decrease the resistance to get the right brightness depending which LED you use. The LED flicker will be worse with the single diode because you will only get half the wave from the AC sine wave.
 


There is not big savings by substituting the bridge rectifier with a single diode.

3 cents for the diode or 8 for the bridge. Five cents savings.

With 5 cents and $1.75 you can get a black coffee at Starbucks  :D

I don't know how I misled myself, but I thought you were using a bridge the size of a scrabble tile.
