recoil spring reel mechanism needed for VAWT
« on: June 26, 2024, 08:06:56 AM »
this is the idea with the auto folding / controlled collapse inwards when the rpm becomes too high.

If only I could find a recoil spring reel of sorts that I can tension and then when triggered releases and unwinds like crazy first pulling the pins out and then pulling the blades inwards.
So if anyone has an idea that would be great.

The tangential velocity moving inwards is probably not a good idea because the pathway distance shortens.  If your 100 rpms at the center of gravity at 2 meters wide suddenly shortens its radius the rpms increase.  The center of gravity is moving a substantially shorter path at the same velocity.

a bit like a figure skater pulling her arms in and then she increases in RPM by insane amounts?

{1}I just thought that we can counter this effect, in case that is what you meant, by setting the trigger point earlier. To compensate for the increase in RPM experienced when the blades are falling inwards while the system is still rotating.{/1}
{2}center of gravity is indeed alwqays to be considered so what if we also make the top of the blades the lightes and the bottom fat and heavy. It will aid in 2 things.
The inertia of the whole turbine will become greater which is what we want (Please do not worry we have got enough power available for it to overcome the resistances). And the center of mass shifts to a lesser degree when the blades do come inwards.

The skater analogy would be correct.

I have a feeling you will be spending a lot of time on this safety system with too much complexity.

You just need a rudimentary braking system.

i think first break and then pull the arms down.

in our heads it sounds simple yes? :)
