Rather than using a step down transformer, I got the idea if you had 2 bridge rectifiers, 1 on each phase of 240vac, then combine the 2 dc outputs, would this give me 120 vdc without any complications?

No.

You'd end up with the full 240dc. The four diodes connected to the two phases would work as a bridge rectifier to give you 240v dc, and the four connected to the centre tap wouldn't do anything.

No wait a second,

Look at this-

https://www.ebay.com/itm/175379806172?chn=ps&norover=1

I bought one if these Tig welders and I was supersized when I realized there were no transformers in it.

So yes there are solid-state machines.

So this is the idea I was thinking of. So this is what you say would give me 240?

you'll get 340vdc from 240vac.

170 from 120vac. 1.4:1

Yes, with the caveat that as Joestue said, the unloaded voltage you would actually see on the output capacitor would be the peak voltage 340v.
